No Bollywood for Middle Aged Women !

Best Blog Tips
There's an old saying - art is reflection of the society! 99% of Bollywood movies are certainly an exception. Interestingly the India film industry aka Bollywood has two clearly defined categories - Stars and Actors ! Stars are evergreen, media friendly, people savy stalwarts, usually adept in marketing and PR activities.  Ironically very few women have been able to achieve stardom in past 100 odd years of India cinema.

Until late 1970s, heroines, as we usually prefer calling them, had a well defined role, character and attributes. In addition, mothers and sometimes sisters too were important part of the Bollywood stories those days! The divas of 50s, 60s and 70s gracefully retired as they hit mid 30s, though most of them were married in the same fraternity,i.e. no dearth of opportunity.  Why only the women/ the heroines take a sabbatical to raise their kids and then they slowly move into obscurity forever? Why women from these wealthy and seemingly liberal entertainment industry powerhouses only become the scapegoats of the double standards? Some might say that the choice was theirs, but how free, how unbiased that decision was !

Those days going to a theater was not considered a good manner, so women rarely went to theaters. According to my guesstimate more then 90% of the Directors, Producers, writers and the technical staff was and is male. So there were genuine reasons for not casting middle aged women those days, i.e. no market for women oriented movies, very few women representatives to hoist the flag !

Cut to 2012 and the situation is still the same. Unfortunately not even young, educated, outward thinking, highly smart, international competition winner and even talented heroines are not able to demand, command good script, well written characters except those of confused love birds. The superstar actresses of 90s and early 00's are already forgotten. The mothers and sisters are no longer relevant in the mindless movies made for weekend multiplex audiences. What a wastage of talent !

I think the reason for current state of affairs lies in a box, infact two boxes. The one box is what you are currently using. A significant % Women in 40s and 50s in India currently are not yet Online. So they are not able to voice their opinion, voice their demands unlike their teen kids. This box has done one more thing. Because the teens and the young kids are constantly in touch with their friends and the rest of the world, so they dont miss the middle aged women anymore in personal and virtual lives and even movies.

The other black box, is our good old, earlier known as Idiot Box. The Indian Television Industry has been filling this vacuum for past 15 years. It has preserved and reserved the Prime Time for Indian women and served them quiet adeptly. Infact the Television has provided good opportunity to showcase talent to several middle aged hero and heroines who were good actors but couldn't achieve stardom in Bollywood.

However I am slightly perplexed here. What happened on the Television screen was the cause or the effect of what happened on the Silver Screen ! Perhaps the reason lies in our expectations. We the viewers always expected our heroines to be beautiful, young, elegant and sexy. We are/were not interested in their acting and so couldn't accept their growing wrinkled face or disproportionate vital statistics !

Let me know what you think...

  1. You've started me wondering too. Wonder why as I feel there are many Indians who appreciate good acting irrespective of age or gender.

  2. Definitely yes- A good acting is welcome irrespective of the age. Coming to the idiot box, what is happening with the female-oriented serials! Most of them are crap.

    1. always appreciate your comment Sush. good acting is always welcome, provided women of certain age to get the opportunity to showcase their talents. Regarding Female oriented serials on the idiot box, I agree most of them are crap, but at least they are giving some opportunity to veteran TV and Bollywood actors, at least they are catering to the Indian women and Im hopeful that with time, the quality of acting, content etc will evolve !

  3. Thanks for the care mate, but maybe you could redefine few things:
    1. "A significant % Women in 40s and 50s in India currently are not yet Online."--Most of the top women bloggers both in indiblogger and in India are in their 40s and 50s. Not only do they make their opinion known but are also popular for it.
    2. "We the viewers always expected our heroines to be beautiful, young, elegant and sexy." There are very few established Bollywood actresses right now in the industry who are in their sweet 20s. While most have touched 30, some are close to 40 (aka Aish, Sushmita, and now a returning Karishma). Buddy, women with oily skin (specially Indian women) do not wrinkle till they hit their almost late 50s or 60s. American women wrinkle fast.

:):) But as I said before thanks for the care, mate!

    1. Its good to read your comments Bhavana. I agree that on Indiblogger has 500 odd popular Indian girl/women blogger. The efforts by these women bloggers without doubt are commendable, but I guess the number is still very small. We still have a long way to go, hope you agree!

I guess because Aish, Susmita and Karishma are hitting 40s, they have stopped getting roles which can do justice to their talent and age and thats the point ! Why our industry keep making movies out of same age old formula year after year. Why the heroines who currently are in their teens or sweet 20s, who were born in the internet era are not able to get roles, which are worth mentioning/discussing!

    2. True, Nitin..agree!! But tell me what is total no. of male population in 40s and 50s who are able to make their opinions felt in our country? Is it an age issue as much as it is a class issue?
I know that you have taken up a topic that many people don't even care for--the concerns and anxieties and invisibilities of middle-aged women and I must congratulate you for it. But I want to keep pushing the subject hoping to explore it more--forgive me for that.
You make a good point about girls in their teens and early twenties not finding roles that justify their age and the concerns at that time--yes, it is one single mould which has no reality whatsoever on the ground--neither for the "mother" roles nor "the young sexy woman" roles!!!
Ughh, now you have me frustrated--I so badly want to keep hope alive!!!!

  4. Interesting post,i admire the actress who plays daadi-sa in Balika Vadhu-look at her age & look at her hard work even today...but when young girls usurp the roles of mothers & grannies without a wrinkle on their face(one example is Ichha of Uttran) it looks disgusting & pathetic.

    1. yup Indu..you pointed another intersting thing. The grannies and several other characters, whom we encounter in real life, have disappeared from the Bollywood and yet we dont mind it...is this because we in real life too are loosing our touch from so many other, precious relationships, because we dont have any time for them !

  5. I really like how you've put it. But apart from a certain type of mindset, its also the kind of work that the actress has taken up.. obviously if majority of your films have shown you in glamorous light, chances are few that you'll be accepted when the X factor withers. However, if an actress has taken up genuine roles, like that of Vidya Balan, Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi, Suchitra Pathak etc, then ofcourse, their appearance ceases to be of consequence. :)

    1. thanks for the comment Rohu. I wanted to extend the idea at two levels, one the good actresses rarely got a mainstream film and the amount of money and recognition they got is minuscule as compared to their popular, glamorous counterparts. Second the glam girls disappeared from the silver screen as they hit mid30s and the talented women disappeared coz no roles/scripts were written for them, so thy took up other equally commendable activities !

  6. Nice blog, but i think now there is no star in Hindi film industry. Only good script, acting, and direction decide the future of a movie, no matter what is the age or gender of the lead.
No one killed Jessica, Dirty picture, Kahaani, I am, 7 khoon maaf, are some good movie in which middle aged actress worked and there is a long list of flops in which many well-known actor worked so i think saying this ‘No Bollywood for Middle Aged Women !’ Is not true.

  7. Hi Nitin

Of late I have seen women performing in much different areas like editing, cinematography etc which was very male oriented earlier. Thats a welcome change. The roles for middle aged women of today seem to be much meatier than the stereo type mothers and sisters of yesteryears waiting for the superstar hero to protect them...But yes, still a long way to go!
